Matthew Nord is the founder and director of Tangled Tones Music Studio. Matthew has been playing music since the age of 6. He has been instructing guitar, piano, ukulele, bass, harmonica & djembe lessons through group classes and private lessons for over 19 years. He graduated from the University of Montana with a B.A. in Anthropology. His course work at the University included 3 semesters in the Music Department as a Composition and Music Technology major. His passion and goal within teaching music is not to produce virtuoso musicians (although it is wonderful if it happens) but simply to encourage individuals to become passionate about their instrument and enjoy music for its simplicity, diversity and depth. Most importantly he strives to encourage musicians to share their musical accomplishments with others.
Matthew’s focus in teaching music is to provide a solid understanding of the basic concepts of music both on paper and with the ear. Proper technique is instilled in students in a patient and non-demanding fashion. His teaching style always puts the student and their goals first. Lessons are formed from a mixture of traditional teaching methods and Suzuki methods (learning by ear). His lessons focus on developing a balance for understanding music both by ear and reading music.
After a strong foundation of basic concepts and proper technique are provided; Matthew introduces students to improvisation and the creative side of music along with the standard beginning piano and guitar repertoire. This early introduction of improvisation and creativity may seem premature but it enforces three of his primary goals as a teacher:
- Having fun with music.
- Learning about the endless possibilities of music, through creativity and improvisation.
- The exploration of various genres of music.
Matthew believes that music is simple, more so, having fun with music and understanding its infinite possibilities is simple. Improvisation and creativity do not have to be complex to be enjoyed. He has enjoyed watching many of his students be captivated and empowered by the original pieces and variations on old songs that they create after learning some of the basic principles of improvisation and composition.
Matthew’s goal as a music instructor and with the establishment of Tangled Tones Music Studio is to provide an outlet for musicians and teachers to share their knowledge and skill of music with others through teaching, performing and recording. It is a place for musicians to meet and converse about teaching, playing and recording music. Matthew’s vision is to convert TTMS from a small business to a non-profit organization within 5 years of business. The reason for this conversion is to involve the public “music community” in being collaborative owners and helping to direct the future of TTMS, its goals and its mission.
